O‘ahu is ringed with more beaches than anyone could ever visit in one trip. Some are world-famous, others are tucked into quiet corners, and each one has its own personality. On our recent trip, four beaches stood out so much that they became our must-visits… one on each side of the island. Together, they show why Hawai‘i is so unforgettable.

Makaha Beach (West Side)
Vibe
Framed by mountains and far quieter than the city beaches, Makaha feels like a hidden gem on O‘ahu’s leeward shore. It’s less crowded, more local, and has a dramatic setting that makes the whole day feel cinematic.
Highlight
Swimming alongside Hawaiian green sea turtles was one of the most memorable experiences of our trip. These moments weren’t planned… but they’re the kind you’ll remember forever.
Important Note
Sea turtles are protected by both state and federal laws. It is illegal to touch, feed, or harass them. Keep at least 10 feet away, avoid nesting areas, and never interfere with hatchlings. Respecting the wildlife ensures these moments remain magical.
Waimea Bay (North Shore)
Vibe
Waimea is legendary in surf culture for its massive winter waves. But during our visit, it was the complete opposite… calm, glassy, and wide open for swimming.
Highlight
The bay stretched out like a mirror. Floating without waves felt like slipping into a natural infinity pool. Even on a cloudy day, the views back toward the cliffs were iconic.
Extra Touch
Right beside the beach, the Waimea River sometimes breaks through to meet the ocean… adding even more beauty to this already stunning spot.
Kailua Beach (East/Windward Side)
Vibe
If we had to pick the most beautiful beach on O‘ahu, Kailua would be it. White sand, turquoise water, and a mountain backdrop combine for postcard-perfect views.
Highlight
This is where playfulness takes over. Wave-jumping, swimming, and endless filming… we couldn’t stop trying to capture how gorgeous Kailua felt. It’s family-friendly, spacious, and has the kind of water you never want to leave.
Tiny Planet Moment
Yes, we even pulled out the Insta360 for a tiny-planet shot. Over the top? Maybe. Worth it? Absolutely.
Waikīkī Beach (South Shore)
Vibe
Touristy, busy, sometimes chaotic… and still completely essential. Waikīkī is tradition for us… the place we start and end each trip.
Highlight
Floating with Diamond Head in view, seeing a rainbow arc across the skyline, and watching the sun set over the ocean while the city glows behind you… Waikīkī is where urban energy and natural beauty collide.
Why We Return
It may be the most famous beach in Hawai‘i, but Waikīkī still gives you small, personal moments that feel like pure magic.
Why These Four?
One on each side of O‘ahu, these beaches showcase the island’s variety:
- West → Quiet, dramatic Makaha
- North → Iconic but calm Waimea
- East → Beautiful, family-friendly Kailua
- South → Iconic, bustling Waikīkī
Each one tells part of the O‘ahu story… and together they made our trip unforgettable.
