Updated October 23, 2026: Updated adult fares and transfer windows, replaced unverified hotel and rideshare price ranges with a complete-trip cost comparison, and corrected the direct W Line airport option and baggage guidance.
Use transit for a day built around Waikiki, Ala Moana, or Downtown Honolulu. Compare a rental car when you want several distant stops or gear you cannot comfortably manage on transit. The useful comparison is the whole day: fares or rental charges, parking, walking, waiting, and the return trip.
What transit costs in October 2026
TheBus and Skyline share the HOLO fare system. Each rider needs a card. The current adult HOLO card fee is $2, in addition to fares.
| Product | Adult price | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| HOLO 2-Hour Pass | $3 | Unlimited qualifying transfers for 2 hours from the first paid tap |
| Stored-value day cap | $7.50 | The daily ceiling on eligible stored-value fares |
| 24-Hour Pass | $7.50 | A separate pass lasting 24 hours from its first tap |
| 3-Day Pass | $20 | 72 hours from the first tap |
| 7-Day Pass | $45 | 168 hours from the first tap |
| Month cap or monthly pass | $90 | Monthly fare capping or a calendar-month pass |
| TheBus cash fare | $3.25 per boarding | Exact fare, no change or transfers; cash does not buy a Skyline ride |
See the City’s current fare table for reduced fares and all conditions. Do not treat the day cap and 24-hour pass as the same time period.
Price the group, then price the car
At the adult stored-value day cap, one person pays up to $7.50 in eligible daily fares, two adults up to $15, and four adults up to $30. These calculations exclude the initial card fee. Riders who qualify for reduced fares need the appropriate card.
For a rental, add the base rate for your dates, taxes and fees, fuel, hotel parking, and any destination parking. A one-day rental can suit a remote outing without paying hotel parking for the whole stay, but check return hours and whether the day’s route leaves time to bring it back.
For rideshare, compare actual app quotes for every planned leg and your party size. A low outward quote does not guarantee the return price or availability.
Parking belongs in the comparison
Check the property’s current policy before paying for the rental. These official pages are useful starting points: Hilton Hawaiian Village parking information, Sheraton Waikiki resort information, and OUTRIGGER Waikiki Beachcomber FAQ. Ask about taxes, overnight versus visitor rates, and in-and-out privileges. Confirm lot signs when you arrive.
A car parked at the hotel while you ride the bus still costs money. On the other hand, a car can save a substantial amount of waiting and transferring on a day with several remote stops. Decide by the route you want to take.
When transit fits
- City days: group Waikiki, Ala Moana, Kakaako, and Downtown stops along a corridor rather than crossing town repeatedly.
- One-anchor outings: one town and one beach give a long North Shore bus day a clearer limit. See our North Shore planning guide.
- Airport to Waikiki: the W Line provides the direct public-transit option from Lelepaua Airport Station. A rail ride to Kahauiki followed by a bus is another pattern, but it adds a transfer and does not turn Skyline into a direct Waikiki train. See current airport connections.
When to compare a car or direct ride
Several remote beaches, an early or late outing beyond useful service, mobility needs, and a large load of equipment can change the decision. Account for every person and bag, the walk from each stop, and the last realistic ride home. A bus route passing a destination does not establish a safe pedestrian route from the stop.
TheBus currently posts a temporary baggage rule allowing one standard suitcase and one smaller carry-on bag per passenger on all routes. Bags must stay in front of or next to you without blocking aisles, occupying extra seats, or interfering with others. Check that temporary notice before traveling; the general baggage rules also remain posted. Skyline has its own rider rules.
TheBus lists a clean, dry soft boogie board without a skeg or fin, up to 48 inches long, among permitted items. That does not extend to a full-length surfboard. Read the equipment and baggage rules before planning a beach day around them.
